Notice period – A Test of Integrity?

Dear Readers

I’ve disappeared from my blog for a very long time and just an apology will not do. I should also commit myself to write on a regular basis which I promise to do.  Here goes the write-up on one of the hot topics. Do read and share your thoughts.

Notice period – A Test of Integrity?
I’ve seen the high performers showing poor attitude and behaving weirdly during their notice period.  The simple reason is, they think there is nothing at stake.
Let us see few things that anybody with integrity should necessarily do during their notice period.

Bring in the first day mindset – Think of the first day of our first job or the first day in any of the jobs in our career.  It would have always been the best like high commitment levels, positive attitude, never- say no attitude, enthusiasm etc., Let us consciously bring in and demonstrate the same mindset even during the notice period. No one could guess that you are serving your notice period. Remember, Notice period is not a honeymoon period.

Respect the current organization – Don’t brag about your new offer and new employer.  It’s toxic since it can demotivate the other employees and no one would appreciate it.  Whatever you are worth it now is due to the value addition given by the current organization and let us give that due respect to the current employer.

Respect the notice period – Notice period is meant for risk mitigation from the perspective of knowledge transfer and business continuity especially in IT/ITes organizations which are fully people driven industries. So don’t get lured by the new offer and over-commit to join much before your notice period. No organization will appreciate that. In fact, talking about your commitment to complete your notice period will show you in better light with your prospective employer.

It’s a small world – We all know what it means.  Moreover, the bad news spread faster than the good news. Once the personal brand is spoiled in one organization, it’s likely that it can spread to your new boss in your next job.

Don’t burn the bridge –The new offer / opportunity may sometimes turn out to be bad.  Even a decent performer with good attitude would be welcomed back or re-hired, but certainly not someone who was a high performer but shown poor attitude during the notice period.

Remember, the essence of Integrity is all about demonstrating it even when there is nothing at stake and even when we know that nobody can track us down and we can go caught-free. After all, the values are for us and only for us, not for others to appreciate us or not for preaching.
